Welcome to Quirky Cottages

About Us

Hi
We wanted to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves to everyone and to put a face behind our business.
We are Sam & Martin, a couple living in what we think is an idyllic part of Cornwall. Billy bob-tail cat decided to join us here, albeit he originally had a tail and could fit into the palm of your hand – but that’s another story!

I’ve lived in Cornwall most of my life and Martin has lived and worked as a Chef in the UK for over 15 years having previously worked in top hotels all over Europe.

Once we arrived in Wesley House in Aug 2016, it seemed a logical step to convert the old derelict barn into a perfect holiday home for guests, so we could share our ‘little piece of paradise’.
95% of the building work has been done by us and although it was a steep learning curve, luckily we’re both fairly creative & hands-on people. Martin particularly likes carving wood and has hand-crafted much of the Cottage’s features, including the wash basin in Quirky Too. I was Martin’s labourer and left in charge of the design & sourcing of materials.

We finally opened for bookings at the start of January 2020 ….. Good timing huh!

We now have the two cottages up and running and we also welcome a few quiet campers as we have so much space.

We love meeting new people, which is why we are looking forward to welcoming you.😁
When you meet us, we won’t look as polished as this photo, as we are continuing to work hard and are generally covered in grass clippings, cement or paint 🤣🤣, but we’ll be here to greet you with a smile when you arrive 😀
All the Best
Sam & Martin (and Billy) xx

The Birth of Wesley House Holidays

We moved to Wesley House in 2016 – a small holding that needed some serious love and care. The derelict barn was in fact, 2 cottages in centuries past, inhabited by the farm workers from the local Cornish Estate. However, the building was neglected & eventually turned into a small milking parlour, then make-shift stables before we came along.

Since our arrival we have worked very hard to clear, renovate and landscape the whole property.
Having tried to get help from builders, who either said they had no time or they wanted the sale of my left kidney, we decided to do it ourselves. With bendy, half metre thick, granite walls and digging out bedrock, we are now delighted to invite guests to stay here and relax in our bubble of paradise.

Officially opening in January 2020, we were excited and nervous at the same time – this was our baby, hand built by us… It proved to be unfounded as all our guests have been amazing, lovely people 🙂

In 2021 we made the decision to open up a very small campsite so we could share our idyllic surroundings with like-minded people. This step proved so popular that we have now decided to continue with it, albeit we still want just a few campers staying.
